In today's fast-paced world, the surge in popularity of delivery apps highlights a growing demand for services that provide not only convenience but also quality and assurance. Deliv stands out by offering a comprehensive list of restaurants, each with stellar reviews, dependable delivery times, and authentic photos of their offerings. This meticulous curation ensures that customers can make informed choices and enjoy a seamless dining experience from the comfort of their homes.

Users + Audience

Deliv caters to individuals with active lifestyles and disposable income who prioritize high-quality food but are constrained by time. Our target audience includes both men and women, typically single or in relationships, with a strong educational background. They are likely to hold professional roles in fields such as finance, IT, or other office-based industries. While not typically in upper management, they value convenience and efficiency, making Deliv the perfect solution for their busy schedules.

Competitive analysis

To inform my research, I conducted a competitive analysis of three leading food delivery services: DoorDash, SkipTheDishes, and Uber Eats. This analysis revealed key insights:

DoorDash and Uber Eats feature real photos of dishes, enhancing visual appeal and aiding customer decision-making
All three platforms include overall ratings but lack individual customer reviews for menu items
These services utilize subcontracted delivery drivers rather than offering a platform for restaurants' existing delivery staff

These findings highlighted opportunities for differentiation and improvement in the food delivery experience.

Process

As the project lead, I directed the product, brand, UX, and UI strategy, ensuring a cohesive and user-focused approach throughout. I was fortunate to benefit from the guidance of an online mentor, whose insights were invaluable during the development of this project.

Using the User-Centered Design (UCD) process, I explored how customers envision an ideal food delivery app by delving into their preferences and expectations. Guided by thorough user research, I brainstormed and developed multiple design solutions to align with their needs and enhance the overall user experience.

Use cases

Through my research analysis, I identified gaps in the current food delivery app offerings. To address these shortcomings, the solution must include:

High-quality, real photos of dishes to attract and engage customers
Authentic customer reviews to build trust and support decision-making
A platform enabling restaurants to integrate their own delivery services seamlessly

These features aim to enhance the user experience while providing added value for both customers and restaurants.

Requirements

Based on the identified use cases, I outlined key design requirements to ensure the solution aligns with customer needs and stays grounded in research insights. These requirements served as guiding principles during the brainstorming and design phases:

Non-Intrusive: Maintain the familiar and intuitive experience that customers expect from similar apps
Simplicity: Design features that are straightforward, efficient, and fast, minimizing friction for users
Smart Functionality: Incorporate intelligent touchpoints that enhance simplicity and integrate seamlessly with the established norms of food delivery apps

These principles ensure a user-centric approach while leveraging the strengths of existing platforms.

Final design

The final design focused on three key opportunity areas for Deliv to stand out in the competitive food delivery market. I introduced innovative solutions to enhance the user experience, including authentic customer reviews and high-quality, real photos of each dish. Additionally, I designed a platform that allows restaurants to seamlessly utilize their existing delivery services, offering a unique advantage in the industry.

Outcomes

This project provided several valuable insights and takeaways:

User-Centered Design: Adopting a UCD approach proved essential for creating effective products. This framework helped structure tasks, maintain focus, and ensure the project stayed on track.
First Impressions Matter: A seamless, customer-first experience is crucial. Simplicity in design allows users to navigate the app effortlessly, creating a positive and lasting first impression.
Stay Problem-Focused: The core of any successful product lies in solving user pain points. Keeping these challenges front and center throughout the process is vital, especially when navigating the complexities of a project.

These lessons reinforce the importance of user empathy, clear objectives, and strategic thinking in creating impactful designs.
